    Desde la segunda mitad del siglo XVI hasta finales del siglo siguiente los habitantes -tanto indios como españoles- de las tierras bajas del Pacífico de las Gobernaciones de Popayán y Antioquia fueron sometidos a largos periodos de guerra. Primero, la presión ejercida por los cristianos desde un largo rosario de ciudades que se extendían desde Pasto hasta la ciudad de Antioquia, provocó que las naciones indias lucharan entre ellas por el control de las tierras, los hombres y el oro. Segundo, la incursión de los españoles desde la cordillera Occidental hacia las tierras bajas conllevó no sólo a la ampliación de la frontera hispana y mestiza, sino también a retrocesos que mantuvo en vilo las comunicaciones entre los centros urbanos y obligó al despoblamiento de algunas regiones importantes para la geopolítica imperial.

    From the second half of the sixteenth century to the last decades of the seventeenth, the peoples �both Indian and Spanish? from the pacific lowlands of the Popayán and Antioquia Provinces were submitted to long periods of war. First, the pressure exerted by the Christians from a long rosary of cities which extended from Pasto to the city of Antioquia, provoked struggles among the Indian Nations over the control of the lands, the men and the gold. Second, the Spanish incursion from the Western Mountain Range to the lowlands, led not only to the extension of the Spanish and Mestizo frontier, but also to regression that kept threatened communication between the urban centers and forced the un-settlement of some regions important to the Imperial Geopolitics.
