    • Ten Years On is a 30-minute video documentary discovered in the course of researching progressive primary education, school architecture and pedagogy. It was locally produced for professional rather than commercial use at a significant historical moment for educational politics and primary practice. Here, we explore the possibilities of using video in general as evidence in educational research adopting contextual perspectives, reading it as an historical document, and as evidence for change in teaching and learning. One of the contexts explored is the development of documentary film as a medium increasingly familiar in the second half of the twentieth century in cinema and television. Here, the medium is used for continuing professional education of teachers and for the communication of pedagogical ideas that had formerly been expounded in written texts or realised in practice. As such, the video engages us directly in a way that requires critical reflection on our responses to the viewing as a creative act. So a further reading responds to the images themselves, highlighting particular themes in the visual representation. This article aims to convey a sense of the video through our descriptive account, interweaving the arguments we present about context and interpretations. We describe and discuss the process by which we engaged with it and, in particular, explore the effects of multiple viewing and the removal of sound. This process led us to begin to encounter unexpected foci that can form new platforms for visual research
