A categorization of the main connectives is presented. Then, both semantic and procedural functions of these connectives are investigated in a textual perspective, according to planning processes involved in text composition. In this context, developmental research on the use of connectives is reviewed. This review distinguishes between oral and written discourse, and compares mastery of the use of connectives in different types of texts.
