The purpose of this research study is to examine the relationship between the children's ability to substitute objects in pretend play and their ability to deceive. Three age groups of 3 to 8 year-old children (n = 45) were asked to perform two tasks. For the first task, the children were prompted to substitute the use of an object for another in a pretend play session. In the second task, the same children were asked to fool an unfriendly puppet in order to obtain the toy they wanted. The results from the object substitution task showed that the 3-4 year olds experienced more difficulties when having to use objects as symbolic representations than the 5-6 and 7-8 year olds. These difficulties seem to be related to the "triune representation" problem (Striano, Tomasello & Rochat, 1999). The results obtained from the deceit task showed that 5-6 and 7-8 year olds were able to deceive others successfully, the 3-4 year olds were not. Thus, the ability to use objects symbolically and the ability to deceive others successfully does not appear to develop concurrently before the age of 5 or 6. The relationship between object substitution and deceit is then discussed within the context of social cognition and more precisely, from the perspective of collective intentionality (Rakoczy, 2008).
