• Resumen

  • This article tries to show that Shakespeare wanted to condemn the vice and the corruption at the beginning of the XVIIth century. At the same time he gave expression to his hopes in the new King, James I.

    We can see these purposes first of all in the sources of the play. These were among others: the "Miracle" and "Morality Plays", Cinthio's Hecatommithi and the "bed-trick".

    However, we can observe the author's attitude much more clearly through the similarities with the Gospel. The characters sometimes use remarks which are in the Gospel. There is a connection between the play and the parables and we can also deduce an allegory.

    Finally Seneca's ideas are combined with the Christian doctrine and are manifested in the text.
