Resumen de L'esport, entre la política i l'espectacle
Sport, between politics and spectacle [CONRAD VILANOU] This article proposes that sport ¿a modern social phenomenon that appeared in the 19th century and which spread throughout the world in the 20th century¿ occupies a middle ground between politics and spectacle. From a historical viewpoint, the article discusses the ideological relations that sport has maintained with nationalist movements, the political implications of the Russian Revolution (1917) and the Cold War period after the Second World War with the resulting influence on the Olympic Games. Finally, the article examines its role in a post-modern, globalised society in which the TV channels offer the best medium for transforming sport into a mass-audience spectacle that fires passions and generates multimillion business deals.
