El espíritu y la letra: una carta confidencial de José Nicolás de Azara al conde de Aranda

  • En el contexto del vasto epistolario del diplomático aragonés José Nicolás de Azara, se comenta la carta confidencial que el 1 de agosto de 1787 dirigió a su paisano el conde de Aranda. Se estudian los mecanismos retóricos característicos del género o impuestos por su propio autor, quien, conforme a la voluntad de claridad de la prosa del siglo XVIII, utiliza un tono coloquial. Se analiza asimismo el carácter dialogal del género epistolar, sus posibilidades de contar con la libertad del documento privado y sus limitaciones por la distancia del destinatario y el temor al incierto destino de la carta. También se intenta poner de manifiesto cómo Azara va creando una imagen concreta de sí mismo para su corresponsal y cómo, al mismo tiempo, las opiniones que vierte permiten caracterizar a un personaje relevante de la Ilustración española. = On the context of the vast epistolary of the Aragonese diplomat José Nicolás de Azara, I comment on the confidential letter he addressed to his fel-low countryman the count of Aranda on the Ist of August, 1787. In this article 1 study the rhetorical mechanisms characteristic of its literary gender or imposed by its own author, who, according to the wish of clarity of the 18th century pro-se, uses a colloquial tone. 1 also analyse the dialogic character of the epistolary gender, its possibilities of narrating with the freedom of the private document and its limits because of the distance of the addressee and the fear of the uncer~ tain destination of the letter. Besides, 1 try to show how Azara is creating a con-crete image of hirnself for his correspondent, and how, at the same time, his opi-nions allow us to characterize an eminent figure of the Spanish Enlightenment.
