  • Resumen
    • The aim of this paper is to analyse the technological foundations of both open access and digital archives preservation. First, a discussion is offered of the Open Archives Initiative, which was developed to facilitate the discovery of content stored in distributed archives. The main components of this initiative are also described: Data Providers, Service Providers, and the OAI-PMH protocol, which was created for the standardised metadata harvesting of the archives. By this means the infrastructure for preservation and interoperability of archives is assured, regardless of their physical location or their parent organisations. Links and metadata related to open access are also analysed, specifically CrossRef, DOI, and OpenURL. Subsequently the article explores the Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS), which was created to assure long term access and preservation of information, regardless of future technological changes. These two initiatives, OAI and OAIS are extremely important for academic institutions and for scientific information.
