The Latin American “tele-novela”, and its North American counterpart, the soap opera, constitute not only one of the steadiest and most profitable genres of television; they are also educational. The formula of Miguel Sabido in Mexico (Entertainment-Education), or that of Social Merchandising in Brazil, not only promotes the soap opera itself, but also endorses a notion of progress inherent in current global abstract culture.
