  • Resumen
    • The texts by Herbert Read presented here are in keeping with the formalist tradition of art history, in their attempt to vindicate the idea of “cinema as art” as proposed by theoreticians such as Rudolf Arnheim and filmmakers such as Jean Epstein. Read’s ideas aim to establish a coherence between the English documentary movement and avantgarde practice. One of the conclusions to be drawn from the reading of these articles is that the social function of cinema on the one hand, and film experimentation on the other, are two facets of one and the same objective: to use cinema as a new means of expression and thought, whether it be the socially committed cinema of Grierson or Cavalcanti, or the poetic filmography of Cocteau. The present paper is part of a broader project which consists of recuperating texts on abstract cinema by critics, theoreticians and art historians.
