  • Resumen
    • told LeBron James to “shut up and dribble” when he spoke out regardingpolice brutality in America. In response, James claimed he was “More than an athlete”and with that, a hashtag was born. In reviewing images associated with tweets usingthe “More Than an Athlete” hashtag (#MTAA) the month after Floyd’s death, weconsidered the use of social media by athletes participating in activism. This studyrevealed images that associated the current athlete activism with that of the athleteswho spoke out during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement while increasing the breadthof those athletes that are willing to articulate their grievances and concerns regarding social justice utilizing slogans and images associated with the larger social justicemovement. Ultimately, these images appear to have the potential to refocus the narrative about what it means to be Black, whose voice matters, and undoing the dismissalof the lived experience of Black people in America
