European political culture has changed significantly in recent years. Working througha global recession, a pandemic, and the outbreak of interstate war, countries havestruggled to get a process in place which can pivot politics into an environmentwhere stability and prosperity are again bedrocks of European polity. Within a volatile context, European integration has—again—come under question as a method ofintergovernmental engagement, with various ideological forces across the continentseeking disintegration and political realignment. Arguably, the basis of the post–Cold War consensus on peacebuilding has been undermined. This chapter looksat the sociopolitical pressures that European states are facing, and with particularreference to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union(EU), it will investigate reasons for the growth of euroscepticism. It will concludeby reviewing how the process of European integration has been compromised andexamining points of intervention where European political life can reconstituteitself as a safeguarding entity for the diverse peoples of an increasingly polarizedcontinent
