This article analyzed the socioeconomic dynamics of Oaxaca during 2010–2024 using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) applied to 17 variables covering social welfare, productive structure, migration, and public investment. Three components were identified that explained 88.8% of the total variance: the first shows how the economy shifted from depending on the Salina Cruz refinery and state government investment toward greater reliance on wages, schooling, and remittances; the second identifies 2017 as the year that model ran out of steam, with construction taking center stage toward the end of the period; the third precisely captures the blow that the COVID-19 pandemic dealt in 2020 to tourism and transport. The data confirm that Oaxaca remains caught in a difficult cycle, although minimum wage increases since 2019 and the arrival of federal infrastructure projects have begun to shift some of those conditions.
