Universities have historically been characterized by recognizing science as a fundamental instrument for understanding and addressing the problems that emerge in the diverse fields of knowledge to which they are institutionally devoted, in close reciprocity with the active participation of students in the development of research processes. In this context, the present study presents an epistemic standpoint on the development of a research culture, with the aim of identifying and assessing the elements that should be present in institutional policies oriented toward its strengthening. The study is situated within the qualitative paradigm and employs narrative as a research methodology, considering that narrated stories hold multiple meanings rather than a single interpretation; therefore, the meanings attributed to fragments of a narrative can only be understood as part of a broader narrative framework. From the analysis conducted, the following central categories emerged: research support, research mentoring, research dissemination, and detractors of research. The results allow us to conclude that research and the management of a research culture are consolidated through a set of practices, actions, decisions, and processes sustained over time, collectively constructed by the university community, beyond the mere existence of regulations or formal guidelines.
