  • Resumen
    • The expansion of Santa Catalina in Palma de Mallorca is an urban project drafted in 1868 as a part of the defense system of the Mallorca fortress. In a context of arms developments, a new advanced fortification system and questioning of the effectiveness of walled cities; political instability, liberal revolutions and ideological tensions in the military; and expansionist demands of the civilian population; was approved, at revolutionary instances, the exceptional authorization for the building of an urban extension located in the first military zone of the Palma fortress. This urban singularity lies on the harmonizing of public utility with the State's defensive interests; two twinning projects in mutual coexistence. Its unusual features imprinted urban personality on this project whose original defensive function must be known and recognized for correct valuation of its cultural legacy.
