Many researches show a continuous disuse of 3rd person clitics in the informal language of Brazilian Portuguese (BP), although they commonly appear in written texts conveyed by the media, as well as in the most formal styles of spoken language. Therefore, this study aims at describing the learning process of these elements by Elementary School students, willing to investigate if the children can interpret the clitics correctly and how school can favor the learning of these forms. In order to work on these issues, we proceeded to a research which analyses the linguistic and social factors that could influence these processes. Our corpus is composed of clitics comprehension tests applied to Elementary School students of both sexes and two different social classes, in a 4th grade group of a public school in Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais, during 10 academic months. The results show that: i) the context in which the clitic is inserted influences significantly on its comprehension; ii) regarding extra linguistic factors, there is a light tendency of a better use by boys who belong to favored social classes, considering the studied phenomenon; and iii) formal education has not shown itself significant to the clitics learning on this school phase.
