Foreign language teaching and translation in the XXI century: challenges and needs

    This work has the objective of presenting: i) work options for the professional of Letras in the teaching and translation market nowadays; ii) the need to analyse points favouring the use of translation strategies in the foreign language classroom – be it in language schools, public and/or private teaching or the university; and iii) translation as a profession. Translation activities will be described in order to give support to the argument that translation promotes understanding and comprehension of both the foreign language and the mother tongue, as well as in order to show how the translator deals with the translation phenomenon and with the concept of translation in the XXI century. Chesterman’s (1997 & 2000) translation strategies will be presented in order to show how, in the context of foreign language teaching, translation can help the teaching and learning of foreign languages and also how, in the context of translation as a profession, the translator deals with the original text in order to produce a new text in the translation context. Finally, concluding points are presented, reinforcing the idea that the use of translation in the foreign language classroom can be a positive aid for both the teacher and students.

    Este trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar: i) as opções de atuação do profissional de Letras no mercado atualmente; ii) a necessidade de analisar pontos que favorecem o uso de estratégias de tradução na sala de aula de línguas estrangeiras – seja em escolas de idiomas, no ensino público e/ou privado ou na universidade; e iii) a tradução como profissão. Atividades de tradução serão descritas para dar suporte ao argumento de que a tradução como ferramenta de ensino promove compreensão e entendimento tanto da língua estrangeira quanto da língua materna, bem como para mostrar como o tradutor lida com o fenômeno tradutório e o conceito de tradução no século XXI. As estratégias de tradução de Chesterman (1997 & 2000) serão descritas para mostrar como, em contexto de ensino de línguas estrangeiras, a tradução pode auxiliar o ensino e aprendizagem de línguas e como, em se tratando da atividade de tradução, o tradutor lida com o texto original para produzir um novo texto em contexto tradutório. Finalmente, apresenta-se a conclusão, reforçando a ideia de que o uso da tradução na sala de aula de línguas estrangeiras pode ser um auxílio positivo tanto para o professor quanto para o aluno.
