Philo of Alexandria’s The Decalogue and The Special Laws 2 constitute the expository work on biblical-legislative texts carried out by a Greek-speaking Jew committed to the sociopolitical situation of his community and to the transmission of Hebrew thought. In The Decalogue 106-120 and The Special Laws 2.224-243, Philo examines the fifth commandment, relative to honoring parents. This prescription implies a reciprocal relationship between parents and children, and certain obligations and duties that the parents had to carry out, including the disciplining of their descendants. The objective of this paper is to analyze the legislative lexicon used by Philo for the duties and punishments of parents towards their children in the aforementioned treatises. We will locate the fifth commandment in a general way within the philonic corpus, then trace the specific lexemes that Philo uses to allude to the semantic field of duties and punishments and, after that, categorize these lexical references according to whether they are linked to the theological plane or to a pragmatic-legislative perspective. Finally, based on the reading of some modern authors specialized in Philo, we will note that the duties raised have legal and pragmatic implications related to the social life of their historical context.
