The objective of this study is to explore the relationship between Internet use andpersonal well-being in adolescence. A sample of 310 students between 12 and 16 years, responded to a questionnaire about the use of the Internet and their self-categorisation asusers: occasional, regular or excessive. These students also responded to Cummins andcol.’s (2003), Personal Well-Being Index, and to an item on satisfaction with life as awhole. A significant and negative correlation is observed between the degree of Internetuse and satisfaction with life as a whole. The results of the four semi- structured group interviews with the adolescents ofdifferent ages who considered themselves as regular or excessive users of Internet, inthe previous questionnaire show which the most important negative consequences of anexcessive use of the Internet are. For instance discussions with parents andbrothers/sisters for the use of the computer, the fact of spending less time studying andwith their homework and the loss of dialogue with the family. In the communication theimplications of the obtained results will be discussed.
