Universities are facing increasing pressure to respond not only to academic demands but also to broader societal expectations. Concepts like Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), sustainability, and good governance are no longer marginal, they now shape how institutions define their mission and measure success. This chapter examines the extent to which the integration of these principles into university strategy contributes to stronger performance in global sustainability rankings, with a particular focus on Spanish universities. The chapter begins with a theoretical analysis of the concept of CSR, exploring its evolution, key definitions, and the main academic approaches that have shaped its understanding in both corporate and educational contexts. By examining classical perspectives—such as shareholder and stakeholder theory—and more recent contributions on shared value and ethical governance, the chapter provides a conceptual foundation for understanding CSR as it applies to higher education institutions. The analysis then turns into two widely recognized sustainability frameworks: STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) and the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking. While both assess institutional sustainability, they do so through distinct methodologies and emphasis. A comparative review of their criteria provides a practical foundation for universities aiming to align with these standards. The chapter also proposes a structured, six-phase approach for institutions seeking to enhance their sustainability strategies and, in turn, their international visibility. The central argument is that embedding CSR, sustainability, and governance into the daily operations and long-term planning of universities is not only desirable, but also increasingly necessary. When such integration is intentional and well-executed, it can support innovation, build trust among stakeholders, and ultimately improve an institution’s standing in the global academic landscape.
