Piramo e Tisbe nel Boccaccio, fra testi e immagini: nuove fonti, varianti ed “errori” nelle illustrazioni del De mulieribus claris

    This essay focuses on the story of Pyramus and Thisbe told in Boccaccio’s De mulieribus claris and offers an in-depth analysis of the iconographical variants in ancient manuscripts and printed editions. The study of the relationship between text and images made it possible to delve deeper into the question of the interference with other texts, as well as to bring attention to some details of Boccaccio’s story wich detach it from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Thus, it has been possible to discover that Boccaccio knew and used the French lai Piramus et Tisbé (perhaps through the mediation of the Ovide moralisé), and that the iconography of the printed editions analysed in this essay seems to be affected by Giovanni Bonsignori’s vernacular translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

    Il saggio prende in esame la storia di Piramo e Tisbe, ampiamente raccontata dal Boccaccio nel De mulieribus claris, e offre un’analisi dettagliata delle varianti illustrative nei manoscritti e nelle edizioni a stampa antiche. Lo studio del rapporto testo-immagine ha permesso di approfondire anche la questione delle interferenze con altri testi, e ha portato l’attenzione su alcuni dettagli del racconto boccacciano che si distaccano dal testo delle Metamorfosi. È stato così possibile scoprire che il Boccaccio conobbe e mise a frutto il racconto francese Piramus et Tisbé (forse attraverso la mediazione dell’Ovide moralisé), e che lo schema iconografico delle edizioni a stampa prese in esame sembra risentire della lettura del volgarizzamento ovidiano di Giovanni Bonsignori.
