Cr/CrN multilayer coatings are widely studied for their excellent oxidation resistance and mechanical properties at high temperatures. To integrate fundamental principles of materials science and engineering with practical experimental skills, we have designed a comprehensive laboratory experiment for undergraduate students. The experiment involves the preparation of Cr/CrN coatings and explores their oxidation resistance through high-temperature testing. Students are introduced to key concepts such as oxidation kinetics, thermogravimetric analysis, and advanced characterization techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The experimental workflow includes the study of microstructural evolution and mass gain during oxidation, helping students understand the relationship between material composition, structure, and high-temperature performance. This hands-on experiment not only reinforces theoretical knowledge but also enhances critical thinking, data interpretation, and teamwork skills. It provides students with valuable exposure to the challenges of protective coatings research, equipping them with practical experience for addressing future challenges in materials science and engineering.
