    Se pretende explicitar la relación entre las recurrentes inundaciones del centro de la ciudad de Granada provocadas por el desbordamiento del río Darro y la creación de suelo público generado mediante su cubrición. Se argumenta que, principalmente a partir de mediados XIX, esta relación se complejiza, al intervenir y solaparse diversos intereses: unos de carácter público, fundamentados en la aplicación de principios higienistas y de ornato, y en evidentes cuestiones de seguridad ciudadana, y otros, de dimensión estrictamente económica, identificados con un estrato social que veía en la generación de nuevo suelo la oportunidad de enriquecerse. Se concluirá que, en plena construcción de la Granada burguesa, la catástrofe real de la inundación en tejido urbano se instrumentaliza en gran medida para justificar la creación de un nuevo eje estructurante en la ciudad que será, ante todo, rentable.

    The paper aims to explain the relationship between the recurrent flooding of the city centre of Granada caused by the overflowing of the river Darro and the creation of public land generated by covering it. It is argued that, mainly from the mid-19th century onwards, this relationship became more complex, as various interests intervened and overlapped: some of a public nature, based on the application of hygienic and ornamental principles, and on obvious issues of public safety, and others, of a strictly economic dimension, identified with a social stratum that saw the generation of new land as an opportunity to enrich itself. It will be argued that, in the midst of the construction of bourgeois Granada, the real catastrophe of the flooding of the urban fabric is used to a large extent to justify the creation of a new structuring axis in the city which will be, above all, profitable.
