This paper deals with the main sociolinguistic mechanisms underlying contact-induced phenomena, especially as they are observable in Italo-Romance. Starting from the discussion of Myers-Scotton’s and Van Coetsem’s models of language contact, we will first try to rework some basic concepts of these models, in order to depict a grid of analysis of matter replication phenomena (borrowing, i.e. prestito) and pattern replication phenomena (calque, i.e. calco). We will then address the diachronic development of some cases of borrowing and calque, and hence their social diffusion, by referring to the speech/language dichotomy (in our terms, discorso and norma respectively). Finally, we will attempt to model the range of language contact phenomena with special attention to the Italo-Romance situation.
