    The article deals with the views of the Catholic Church, Methodism, and the Republic on civil marriage and divorce, starting from the Belenense press of the late nineteenth century. In this way, the present reflection was based on the logic that the three institutions made politico-religious language, on what their interpretations about nuptials and marital separation varied widely, this was because the narrative message was in dispute to become predominant about those themes.

    Partindo da imprensa belenense do final do século XIX, o artigo trata dos pontos de vista da Igreja Católica, do Metodismo e da República a respeito do casamento civil e do divórcio. Dessa maneira, a presente reflexão sustentou-se na lógica de que as três instituições fabricavam linguagens político-religiosas, em que suas interpretações acerca das núpcias e da separação conjugal bastante variaram. Isso ocorria porque estava em disputa a mensagem narrativa a se tornar predominanteacerca daqueles temas.
