At the time when the second edition of the Llibre blanc (White paper) waspublished (1988), environmental education (EE) was a subject that had only been talkedabout for a decade in Catalonia. During these years, there has been a great expansion ofEE, as well as a remarkable evolution and diversification. This article attempts to offer anecessarily incomplete and non-exhaustive panorama of Catalan EE and its evolution inthe last three decades. We introduce it with references to the international context and tothe different models of EE, and we appraise the work done in different areas. On thisbasis, we identify sixty challenges involving aspects to be improved and paths that canhelp us move forward.
