    La novela de ciencia ficción "Altered Carbon", de Richard K. Morgan (2002), desarrolla una trama marcada por la alienación que sufre el individuo debido al desarrollo desmedido de la tecnología. El mundo de "Altered Carbon" se sustenta sobre la tecnología de la “pila cortical”, un aparato capaz de contener la conciencia humana en forma de datos informáticos. Con ella, la mente puede cambiar de un cuerpo a otro, consiguiendo que la persona viva ilimitadamente. El presente artículo pretende analizar cómo la pila ha redefinido la vida del individuo de la novela y cómo ha impactado en la relación que mantiene con su cuerpo, su identidad y la muerte. Asimismo, se explorarán los resultados de haber explotado la inmortalidad como un negocio en el que preservar la mente por encima del cuerpo es la prioridad. Dichos resultados, como son la desigualdad social económica y religiosa, la crisis de identidad y la devaluación del individuo a un mero producto de consumo, se relacionarán con aquellos que podrían acontecer en el mundo real de continuar insistiendo en proyectar un futuro en el que el cuerpo supone un obstáculo para desarrollar todo el potencial contenido en la mente del individuo.

    The science fiction novel "Altered Carbon", by Richard K. Morgan (2002), develops a plot marked by the individual’s alienation due to the excessive development of technology. The world of "Altered Carbon" is founded over the “cortical stack” technology, a device capable of containing human consciousness in the form of computer data. Through it, the mind can change from one body to another, allowing a person to live unlimitedly. The present article aims to analyze how the stack has redefined the individual’s life within the novel and how it has affected the relationship they have with their body, their identity and death. Likewise, the results of having exploited immortality as a business, where preserving the mind over the body is the priority, will be explored. These results, such as social economic and religious inequality, identity crisis and the individual’s devaluation to a mere consumer product, will be related to those that could happen in the real world, due to the projection of a future where the body is an obstacle to develop all the potential contained in the individual’s mind.
