Metáfora, metonímia e cognição: um percurso da retórica à semântica cognitiva

From the starting point of rhetoric, this paper will present a theoretical path in regard to the notions of metaphor and metonymy in order to highlight some questions that are relevant to the discussion involving such concepts in the field of linguistics, e.g. (1) the classic pragmatic approach based on conversational implicatures (Grice, 1975), (2) the neo-Gricean pragmatic branch of relevance theory (Sperber and Wilson, 1995), and (3) the paradigm of cognitive linguistics (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980). Our aim is to begin with the perspectives that adopt a categorical distinction between the domains of semantics and pragmatics, in order to situate the discussion employed by the cognitivist model in regard to relations between metaphor, metonymy and cognition. Furthermore, we will see how the cognitive component may be addressed differently depending on the assumed theoretical paradigm.

Neste artigo, apresentamos um percurso teórico das noções de metáfora e metonímia partindo da Retórica, a fim de destacar algumas questões que são pertinentes para o debate em torno desses conceitos no âmbito da Linguística – em particular, i) na abordagem pragmática clássica baseada em implicaturas conversacionais (Grice, 1975); ii) na vertente pragmática neogriceana da Teoria da Relevância (Sperber; Wilson, 1995); e, por fim, iii) no paradigma da Linguística Cognitiva (Lakoff; Johnson, 1980). O nosso objetivo é partir de perspectivas que assumem uma separação categórica entre os domínios da Semântica e da Pragmática, a fim de situar a discussão empreendida pelo modelo cognitivista no que diz respeito à relação entre metáfora, metonímia e cognição. Veremos também como o componente cognitivo é considerado diferentemente a depender do paradigma teórico assumido.
