La contribución del pensamiento de Catherine Sturges en las iniciativas educativas de los profesores de la Mixteca en 1926

    El presente trabajo analiza la defensa de la raza mixteca hecha por Catherine Vesta Sturges en 1926, para mostrar el cuestionamiento al programa de Misiones Culturales por los extranjeros y su influencia en el magisterio. La trabajadora social de las misiones de 1926 reformuló los planteamientos de la escuela rural mexicana y optó por organizar pláticas con los profesores para exhortarlos a preservar sus costumbres. Los profesores de la Mixteca tomaron los preceptos e iniciaron un movimiento magisterial para fortalecer a la patria chica mixteca. Sobre las observaciones de los extranjeros, principalmente contamos con los dictámenes emitidos en la evaluación de las misiones culturales en 1927. Tal vez el caso de Sturges sea singular, por el aprecio que le dieron los profesores en la Mixteca durante su visita en 1926. En el Archivo de la SEP se encuentra un expediente de la crítica que hizo saber a Rafael Ramírez sobre su experiencia en la Mixteca. Aunque sus opiniones fueron limitadas en la publicación de la SEP, Sturges en 1927 publicó el texto “Along the way with rural teachers” en la revista Mexican Folkways. Esta investigación se basó en la consulta de varios archivos generales, como son el Archivo de la SEP y el AGEO, y locales, como el archivo municipal de Tlaxiaco, archivo municipal de Yolomecatl, archivos parroquiales y familiares.

    This work analyzes the defense of the Mixtec race by Catherine Vesta Sturges in 1926, to show other questions about the Cultural Missions program by foreigners and its influence on the teaching profession. The social worker of the missions in 1926 reformulated the approaches of the Mexican rural school and chose to organize talks with the teachers to encourage them to preserve their customs. The teachers of the Mixteca adopted the precepts and started a teaching movement to strengthen the Mixtec homeland. Regarding the observations of the foreigners, we mainly have the opinions issued in the evaluation of the cultural missions in 1927. Perhaps the case of Sturges is unique due to the appreciation that the teachers in the Mixteca gave her during her visit in 1926. In the SEP Archive, there is a file on the criticism that she made known to Rafael Ramírez, about her experience in the Mixteca. Although her opinions were limited in the SEP publication, in 1927 Sturges published the text “Along the way with rural teachers” in Mexican Folkways magazine. This research was based on the consultation of several general archives, such as the Archive of the SEP and AGEO, and local ones such as the municipal archive of Tlaxiaco, the municipal archive of Yolomecatl, parish and family archives.
