The present study highlights the importance of photography as a source for educational research and as a cultural product that contributes to the construction of a school memory. The definitions of “school memory” and the term “school photography” are examined, as well as their function in educational research. The analysis focuses on the school yearbooks of the Emiliano Zapata Primary School (1960-2006) in Villa Juárez, Chihuahua, using Marzal’s methodology for the textual analysis of the portraits included in the said yearbooks. Among the main findings, it is evident that yearbooks not only document the school past of those who were part of the institution, but also function as remembrance items, playing a crucial role in the construction of school memory. Furthermore, it is concluded that the portraits of the students include various visual elements that help to understand the school culture and the era represented, susceptible to an iconological analysis.
