    • The purpose ot this thesis is to show the importance ot ports tor Catalonia's development. Barcelona and Tarragona ports were selected far exam ination. The study's point of departure was that ports define strategic plans which describe their reality and environment, specifying whatthey are and what theywant to be and designing their future within a specified time trame. With this in mind, the strategic plans of several EU ports (Mediterranean area: Valencia, Algeciras, Genoa and Taranta; Atlantic area: Bilbao, Pasajes, Dunkerque, Ghent, Antwerp and Bremen) and of Barcelona and Tarragona ports were compared. Comparison items included initial basic ideas such as mission, vis ion, values and commitments, as well as a common goal ot ali ports which is regarded as one ottheir main indicators, i.e. value and evolution of port traffic. The second part of this thesis examines port traffic data time series and their corresponding ARIMA forecasting model in order to compare the models. The Box-Jenkins method was applied considering first ali available data and second the intluence of atypical data and their impact on the future of ports. In sorne cases, the data time series was interrupted on account of the economic crisis affecting the EU, and only the data time series between January 2009 and December 2014 were used. The two first chapters of the thesis present an accurate definition of a general plan applied to a business organization like a port authority considering the public and private work performed bythese institutions. Subsequently,the basic ideas laid out in the strategic plans of the studied ports are explained according to intormation provided byport authorities .With regard to the Box-Jenkins method for analysis of data time series, in this case monthly values of goods tratfic in the ports compared, the thesis examines its historical evolution, present application, computer language, specifically R, and application software, as well as data series and R language scripts. The tollowing chapters provide Box-Jenkins data for ali studied ports. Results come from directtreatment of data time series and studies considering the influence of atypical data. Finally, the chapter which discusses the information treated allows the comparison of the strategic plans of the studied ports, observation of similarities and differences, and comparison of Box-Jenkins models. The objective work practice employed in this chapter enables the importance of Barcelona and Tarragona ports in Catalonia's development to be assessed trom a territorial, economic and social perspective. The conclusions ot this thesis focus on this aspect.
