SUMMARY This thesis has focused on the study of a set of surface and subterranean hydric systems that, although very different in nature, are intimately related: the middle and final course of the River Guadalete, its alluvial aquifer (code 062.008) and the aquifer of Jerez de la Frontera, (code 062.009). The zone that these aquifers occupy, together with the margins of the river Guadalete, are utilised for irrigated agriculture and are also subjected to intense contamination of urban and industrial origin. The main goal is established in a general way the degree of contamination that they support, taking a special interest in those contaminants termed "emerging". Until now, the effects of these emerging contaminants on the ecosystems and on human health are unknown. Samplings have been performed intensively in extreme conditions of flow rate of the river and piezometric level. The field work have been complemented with assays in the laboratory to characterise the processes that govern the behaviour and the distribution of organic emerging contaminants in the study area.
