Los avances en los transportes y las comunicaciones acontecidos en las últimas décadas han provocado la deslocalización y separación de los centros de producción y consumo de estos mercados, separando geográficamente a sus participantes y modificando las reglas del juego entre estos agentes. Esto ha convertido al sector transporte en un pilar esencial para las distintas economías nacionales. Dentro de la industria del transporte, el transporte marítimo tiene especial relevancia a la ahora de conectar los distintos mercados o agentes, estando notablemente influido por los puertos, los cuales son los principales nodos de su red física siendo sus puntos de origen y destino. En este contexto, las decisiones estratégicas en el sector marítimo, y concretamente en el portuario, cobran especial importancia, ya que afectan a la producción de las empresas, a las relaciones entre los distintos mercados y al crecimiento económico. El objetivo de la presente tesis es estudiar estas estrategias así como sus efectos sobre los beneficios, el bienestar o la asignación de los recursos. Para ello se conjugan modelos teóricos y aplicaciones empíricas.

Developments in transport and communications occurred in recent decades have led to the relocation and separation of the main centers of production and consumption, separating geographically their participants and changing the game rules among these agents. This has led to the transport sector to become a key pillar for national economies. Within the transportation industry, maritime industry has special relevance to connect different markets or agents, being significantly influenced by the ports, which are the main nodes of its physical network. In this context, strategic decisions in the maritime industry, and specifically in the port sector, are particularly important because they affect firms' location, relations between different markets, economic growth and social welfare. The aim of this thesis is to study these strategies and their impact on firms' profits, social welfare or the allocation of resources. To do this theoretical models and empirical applications are combined.
