African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) is a large, cytoplasmic, double-stranded DNA virus that infects different species of swine, including domestic pigs and wild suids, and causing an aconomically important disease against which no vaccine exists so far.
The vast majority of animal cytolytic viruses interfere with celular gene expression after infection of host cells. Cellular protein synthesis in particular is usually abrogated at times when late viral proteins are being synthesized. Similarly to VV infection, during ASFV infection P-elF2alfa levels decrease at early times post infection, and remain undetectable throughout the infection.
