This thesis presents a content analysis of 270 oral and spontaneous explanations provided by secondary school ELE teachers and prospective teachers (n=30) in Germany over 9 uses of ser and estar. The explanations, collected by means of a questionnaire, were provided within the context of individual interviews, in which fictional class scenarios were proposed to the participants. The results indicate, on one hand, a high level of insecurity in providing the requested explanations. On the other hand, two different trends are visible in the repertoire of explanations about ser and estar: the first shows a tendency towards the use of dichotomic notions, among which permanencia-temporalidad stands out, while the other leans towards a mix of a notional-functional approach and a lexical-grammatical approach. Furthermore, an analysis of the validity of the explanations was carried out according to the requirements for explanation patterns and didactic reduction established by Lehner (2020: 141). It demonstrates why not all identified explanation patterns are equally suitable for ELE teaching. Lastly, an analysis of the differences between subgroups confirms, for this specific study group, that knowledge about explanations and representations for ser and estar is significantly lower amongst the group of students than the native speaking teachers.
