This doctoral thesis, titled “Consoling and Conciliatory: The Historic-Philosophical Foundations for a Critical Evaluation of Philipp Mainländer’s Redemptive Project”, offers a systematic and original analysis of The Philosophy of Redemption (Die Philosophie der Erlösung), the main work of the thinker from Offenbach. The central thesis establishes that Mainländer’s philosophy is built as a conciliatory system of systematically and historically irreconcilable ideas and, simultaneously, as a consoling system against the essential suffering of existence. This redemptive project rests on the premise that death is the sole salvation from suffering, promising a universal and peaceful outcome: collective redemption through the annihilation of being. The doctoral thesis was guided by the hypothesis that an analysis of the philosophical, historical, and biographical background would provide new foundations for the understanding of Mainländer’s philosophy. The research is developed across six parts, beginning with the “Philosophical Archaeology” (Part I), which establishes the elementary terminology of the system, and the “Reading of The Philosophy of Redemption” (Part II), which evaluates its historical reception between 1876 and 2025. The analysis of the context (Part III) is fundamental and has led to a key finding: Mainländer’s philosophy was not totally forgotten, but rather suffered a historical dissonance. His solutions for the sociopolitical and theoretical controversies of 19th-century Germany (such as pantheism and pessimism) arrived late, which caused them not to resonate with the dominant intellectual needs of his time. In Part IV, “The Character of a Suicidal Philosopher”, the relationship between life and work is addressed, seeking to go beyond psychopathological reductionism. A new thesis is proposed regarding the practical conciliation of the author’s “will to live” and “will to die”. The analysis of unpublished sources, such as the manuscript Das Manöver, was crucial to demonstrate the complexity of his character, where life acquires a leading role as a means to accelerate the attainment of death. The core of the argumentation (Part V, “Three Antinomies”) demonstrates the internal consistency of the system through the resolution of three conceptual conflicts: 1. Realism and Idealism: Mainländer establishes the conciliation by arguing that the cognitive faculties have the primary role of understanding the world, and not of creating it. This guarantees the reality of an external world independent of the subject (realism), while simultaneously maintaining the a priori forms of understanding (idealism). This thesis maintains that Mainländer achieves this conciliation not through dialectical negation, but by means of the transformation of the essence of the elements. 2. Unity and Multiplicity: This antinomy is resolved through the notion of virtuality. Although pre-mundane unity disintegrated in a single, free act, its essence remains virtualiter in the inheritance of each individual. This justifies the teleology of the universe (the necessity of redemption) without postulating a transcendent entity that actively operates upon the multiplicity. Methodologically, this is supported by an epistemological entropy, which demands to consider the pre-mundane unity as mere regulative speculation. 3. Freedom and Necessity: Absolute freedom is situated in the pre-mundane decision of the transcendent unity, while immanent existence is governed by necessity. However, practical freedom is manifested in the “flaming of the will” of the wise individual. This knowledge of the final destiny (the great advantage of non-being) allows the individual to accelerate collective redemption through ethics (virginity) and politics (the socialist ideal state). Finally, Part VI presents the conclusions, establishing that Mainländer’s philosophy is consoling by offering universal redemption from suffering. This consolation is founded on scientific atheism, which denies the existence of a transcendent God, while, simultaneously, it validates a purified theism by postulating the logical necessity of self-destructive unity. The main contribution lies in uncovering the system of anachronistic and pathological interpretations, re-evaluating its internal coherence, and establishing historical dissonance as the cause of its initial marginality.
