The figure and work of Francesc Palanca i Roca, one of the most important playwrights of 19th-century Valencia, have been overshadowed by the significance and relevance of the work of other figures from that period, such as Josep Bernat i Baldoví and Eduard Escalante. Therefore, at a time when studies are proliferating that discover, recover, rehabilitate and vindicate neglected or completely forgotten 19th-century authors, this research aims to shed light on the personal, social, political and creative experiences of the writer born in Alzira. Thus, through knowledge of his life and analysis of his plays, we aim to offer an academic assessment of his biobibliography in the complex social, political and cultural context of the 19th century. We will also highlight the scope of his role in the cultural landscape of that period and his contribution to Valencian theatre with ambitious attempts to introduce new genres, some of which went beyond the sainete. This task, however, has not been easy because the sources, testimonies and bibliography referring to Palanca i Roca are often confusing and, on occasions, erroneous. Not to mention the accumulation of prejudices and stereotypes that have been levelled at 19th-century Valencian theatre and its authors. Therefore, based on the information that studies and monographs have left us, we propose a series of hypotheses that will be ascertained with the help of data from the analysis and examination of Palanca i Roca’s biography and catalogue. Ultimately, our contribution intends to be another small step in the construction of a history of Catalan theatre that offers a complete and uncomplicated view of the authors and the genres they cultivated, and that contributes to restoring, vindicating and dignifying our theatre in general, and our popular theatre in particular.
