Proportional reasoning plays a crucial role in the transition from arithmetic to algebra and is a central topic in the early years of secondary education. However, numerous studies have highlighted persistent difficulties students face in understanding and applying proportional concepts.
This research addresses the need to assess students’ understanding of direct proportionality through the development and validation of the Development and validation of a Direct Proportionality Reasoning Assessment Instrument: (DPRAI). The instrument aims to characterise the conceptual and procedural knowledge of first-year secondary education students and to inform improvements in teaching practices.
A sample of 305 first-year secondary students participated in the study. Their responses to the DPRAI were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods, incorporating various coded variables related to problem type, semantic features, and data representation.
Findings indicate that female students and those from urban schools performed significantly better in direct proportionality tasks. Furthermore, notable differences emerged depending on the type of problem, semantic structure, and the format in which data were presented. The cross-product algorithm was identified as the most frequently and effectively used correct strategy, though its use varied significantly with problem structure. Incorrect strategies were also found to be influenced by multiple contextual and cognitive variables.
Lastly, the study examined the level of algebraic reasoning in student responses. The majority demonstrated a Level 0 of algebraisation, which is substantially lower than expected at this stage of schooling, highlighting the need for targeted instructional interventions.
