In 1592, a large Japanese fleet landed near Busan. The Korean garrison, led by Chong Pal, was taken aback by the aggression of its neighbors, although they had suspected that an attack of such magnitude was possible. This event marked the beginning of the Imjin Wars (1592–1598). It was not an isolated milestone in the relations between the Land of the Morning Calm and the Land of the Rising Sun. On the contrary, it constituted yet another episode in the long series of conflicts that began in the fourth century and continued into the twentieth century. This study analyzes the conflict from a Korean perspective while situating it within the broader history of Korean-Japanese relations.
