My PhD focuses on the properties and evolution of dust in nearby galaxies. This project is divided into three smaller research projects. The first project compares the observed dust properties for the four nearby spiral galaxies NGC628 (M87), NGC5457 (M101), NGC598 (M33), and NGC300 with isolated galaxy simulations created by a team from Osaka. We calibrated these simulations to recreate the radial profiles in the stellar and gas mass of NGC628, which should imply we have a gas infall and star formation history similar to NGC628. These simulations were used to investigate the dust masses and the ratio between small and large dust grains. We show we can reproduce the dust masses for NGC628 after we correct for the maximum amount of metals available to be locked up into dust grains. However, we do notice that the simulated small-to-large grain ratio always overestimates compared to what is observed. We further conclude that we cannot distinguish between the models with different dust accretion timescales since we do not observe the metallicities where the models differentiate. This is the primary reason why we cannot determine an accretion timescale. We finally notice how the ratio between small and large grains strongly depends on the dense gas fraction. This suggests the overproduction of small grains relates to the models converting the different dust grain sizes. The second research project recreates the stellar and dust content using chemical evolution models for the same four galaxies. According to the models, we can explain individual differences in the stellar and gas content with the star formation efficiency, the initial gas mass infall rate, the importance of outflows, and differences in the gas infall. We find for all four galaxies a decrease in the star-formation efficiency, initial gas mass infall rate, and the gas infall timescale. The importance of outflow increases with radius. NGC628 is the least affected by outflows. NGC5457 has similar values in the center, but the influence strongly increases with radius. NGC598 and NGC300 are the most affected, with similar values to the outskirts for NGC5457. We further notice how the four galaxies require different values for the dust accretion efficiency and the gas mass impacted per supernova to reproduce the dust mass radial profile. NGC628 consistently needs a lower accretion efficiency and a low influence of SNe at all radii. NGC5457 has similar values in the center, but it needs higher dust accretion efficiencies in the outskirts. NGC598 and NGC300 consistently require higher dust accretion efficiencies to reproduce the observed dust masses. We conclude that the importance of dust accretion depends on the importance of gas outflows. The final research project uses new observations with CFHT SITELLE to map out dust attenuation. The CFHT SITELLE instrument has observed four areas of 2kpc × 2kpc with an angular resolution of 0.32" in the Andromeda galaxy. This instrument provides optical IFUs containing important spectral lines, such as Hα, Hβ, and lines to determine metallicities. We used the ratio between Hα and Hβ, the Balmer decrement, to quantify the attenuation. The attenuation, linked with the amount of small grains, depends on the dust mass, but the correlation is influenced by the relative distribution between stars and dust. We see that our observations lie between the theoretical foreground screen and mixed models. The scatter in our correlation heavily depends on the orientation of stars and dust. When we use ratios between attenuated light and the re-emission in infrared, we notice the lower ratios correspond with higher values in AV and dust mass. The combination of the three projects shows we need follow-up work to specify dust grain properties important for grain growth.
