The thesis mainly explores the mechanical behaviour and failure mechanisms of PLLA. On the one hand, the brittle-ductile transition is studied in samples with a highly suppressed physical aging and the deformation of spherulites is studied by atomic force microscopy and polarized Raman spectroscopy in partially crystallized PLLA films. On the other hand, the role of inorganic fillers in the toughness loss due to physical aging of PLLA/BaSO4 composites is studied. Finally, the glass transition of PLLA is lowered by the addition of PEG to exploit the shape memory effect of the polymer at physiologically safe temperatures. Additionally, by adding gold nanorods to the system, the shape recovery is triggered by near infrared light stimulus.
