This thesis investigates the quality of the spectral ultraviolet (UV) irradiance measurements recorded by two spectroradiometers, a scanning instrument (Brewer spectrophotometer) and a CCD-based model (BTS2048-UV-S-WP). These instruments are versatile, since their measurements can be used to assess UV trends, understand the mechanisms that drive them, and derive various radiometric products. Quality assurance and quality control protocols for spectroradiometers are not yet fully defined. Consequently, there are no standardised procedures for their calibration, maintenance, uncertainty evaluation, processing, and filtering of their data. Whitin this framework, in this thesis several techniques for the uncertainty evaluation of their measurements were proposed and validated. Although the methodologies were developed for Brewer spectrophotometers, they are general and can be adapted to other spectroradiometers. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was also carried out to identify the main sources of uncertainty and to suggest different approaches for reducing the overall measurement uncertainty. Regarding quality assurance, several steps of the process through which spectroradiometers are compared were modified to improve the evaluation of their long-term performance. This methodology is also general and can be adapted to any type of spectroradiometer, even though it was initially developed for BTS instruments. Lastly, the uncertainty of the intercomparison of the spectral UV measurements between Brewer spectroradiometers and the European reference unit has been evaluated.
