  • Resumen
    • This thesis examines the interplay among elements in communication when delivering a message with the purpose of being humorous on stage, particularly in British and Spanish stand-up comedy. Firstly, we provide a theoretical framework to have a solid foundation for our work, in which we use Relevance Theory as the cognitive pragmatic basis of this research. Secondly, we employ such principles empirically by means of an exhaustive interdisciplinary multimodal analysis of our corpus. Such a corpus analysed in our study encompasses one British comic monologue and one Spanish comic monologue. Then, we implement, as a tool of analysis, the worksheet designed by Martínez Sierra (2004, 2008) and adapt it to be applied in accordance with our purposes. We first observe and categorise the responses of the audience and generate a taxonomy to be used in this research and proceed to segment the corpus. Next, by considering the three variables subject to analysis, we locate and register the use of different communicative components (verbal, nonverbal and paraverbal), obtain the resulting cognitive effects and the use of different stand-up specific techniques. According to the results, the use of nonverbal and paraverbal communicative components is dominant in contrast to the usage of verbal elements. We also detect some possible tendencies or potential patterns regarding cognitive effects and stand-up specific techniques. In conclusion, the methodology employed, the theory sustaining this research, and the worksheet implemented in our analysis serve us to accomplish the objectives set for this study and have proven to be adequate for our purposes.
