Pollution of water resources is a problem of growing importance. Scientific evidences suggest that a wide variety of chemicals disrupts the endocrine systems of animals and causes adverse effects at the individual level but also at the population and/or community level. Due to the freshwater contamination registered in Córdoba Province and the limited knowledge about its effects on the native fish fauna, the main objective of the present thesis was to evaluate the response of reproductive biomarkers at different levels of biological organization (cell, tissue, somatic and behavioral) in males of the Jenynsia multidentata exposed to compounds with estrogenic activity, under laboratory and field conditions. Also in this work it was developed a simple protocol for collection and processing sperm samples for this fish species. Different biomarkers were analyzed after the exposure to: 17β-estradiol, 17α-ethinylestradiol, 4nnonylphenol and 17α-methyltestosterone. At field, the reproductive responses were compared in individuals from two sites with different water quality of Rio Suquía River. The laboratory results show that reproductive behavior and the ultrastructure of gonads were the most sensitive biomarkers from exposure to xenoestrogens. Among the sperm parameters, the sperm count and viability showed in generally more changes in individuals exposed to the toxics tested. The 17α-ethinylestradiol was the most potent estrogenic compound, whereas the different concentrations of 17α-methyltestosterone used in the present study did not present xenoestrogenic activity. At field, the water quality of the Rio Suquía was significantly drecreased downstream Cordoba city. The most sensitive biomarkers under such environmental degradation were reproductive behavior, sperm velocities, testis histology and ultrastructure and somatic indices. The results obtained through the present research demonstrate the importance of evaluating the xenobiotics effects on reproductive parameters through the application of a set of biomarkers. J. multidentata reproduction could be affected after chronic exposure to environmental pollutants and therefore, the water quality degradation could represent a threat to the species. The functioning of hypothalamuspituitary-gonadal axis is conserved among vertebrates, including humans, thus the alterations observed in this species may also be registered in other organisms. Furthermore, the results obtained at field reflect the need for improvements in the treatment of municipal, industrial and agricultural effluents in order to reduce the amount of pollutants released into the freshwater system.
