  • Resumen
    • The goal of this thesis is to evaluate from a feminist perspective whether the quality of life in urban spaces is equal for women and men The research method is based on a triangulation of qualitative and quantitative bibliographic techniques, which have been developed in different phases and with different objectives, in order to analyse the object of study in depth from different approaches and focuses.

The research combines a macro and a micro approach. The macro approach critically analyses the notion of quality of life and the studies that have been carried out in this field. The result of this analysis is that, in most of cases, the quality of life does not incorporate a gender perspective, and therefore women’s everyday life problems in the city are not taken into account. Furthermore, the very definition of quality of life contains an androcentric bias because it does not incorporate fundamental aspects of people's everyday lives, such as care, the asymmetric distribution of time and tasks or gender-based violence.

Gender is as a relational and symbolic category present in all social constructions. This means that it is reflected in the quality of life as a concept, which is framed within a subjective scale of values. And it is also reflected in the city, as a social construction resulting from power structures that establish hierarchies and priorities.

This dissertation proposes an alternative definition of urban quality of life, which includes the diversity of people's experiences and makes social inequalities visible. This conceptualisation is based on everyday life, incorporating gender as a structuring category.

From a micro scale, the quality of life in the territory is specified, evaluating whether the urban environments provide adequate physical support to women and men’s everyday life activities.

The empirical part is articulated through a case study, developed in the neighbourhoods of Camp de l'Arpa and Besós and Maresme in Barcelona. First, through a survey, this thesis provides primary data on the quality of life of women and men in relation to their everyday life activities and perceptions in their neighbourhoods. Second, each context is evaluated through the parameters of feminist urban planning, and focusing on the three key aspects identified in the survey: mobility, care and perception of safety.

Based on the data obtained in the case study, a system of non-androcentric quality of life indicators has been developed. These indicators identify the elements of everyday life that lead to greater gender inequalities and relates them to the characteristics of the urban environment.

The thesis provides a detailed picture of women and men’s everyday life in two specific areas of the city of Barcelona, identifying the main aspects to be improved both through public policies and social movements and non-profit organizations.

In conclusion, to achieve a better quality of life in the city for everyone, I propose a new urban paradigm, the caring city, that it is a city that takes care of us, let us to take care of ourselves, allows us to take care of other people and takes care of the environment.
