  • Resumen
    • The main issue of this research is to manage the influences of photovoltaic (PV) systems on the power grids by determining the appropriate solutions. This thesis has been developing three new methodologies to manage the influence of PV plants, these methodologies are smart grid control strategy, energy storage management, and the optimal PV size and location using modified Jaya algorithm. Modeling of the main equipment in the overall system will be necessary to study the impacts on the electrical power grid of the PV systems. The thesis focused on the influences of the real PV systems located at German Jordanian University (GJU) and the standard IEEE-33 bus test system as case studies.

Nowadays, the spread of increased photovoltaic systems and electric vehicles (EVs) are leading to many problems in electrical grids. The topic is also investigated in the thesis, and the smart grid strategy is implementing to mitigate the impacts of the PV and EV on the GJU grid. The simulation and validation were performed for the GJU grid in terms of the power flow and smart grid application by DIgSILENT software. The results show the performance of the grid with a Photovoltaic system at EVs penetration in terms of loading mitigation and voltage stability.

In the context of the rapid technical and technological development in photovoltaic systems, the low cost and encouraging government investments for photovoltaic systems. It seems likely that consumers will install large-scale photovoltaic power generation systems in the near future. Further, in weak electrical power grids and unfeasible for a large-scale photovoltaic system will be installed at one site due to unavailable land. Thus, a feasible solution would be the installation of distributed PV systems of the same size at several locations along the distribution feeder. This leads to penetration levels in these locations will be very higher. At a high penetration level of PV systems, there are instants when the net production is more than the net demand; it results in overloading of the distribution feeders and excessive power losses. Without determining the optimal capacities PV systems and locations can produce and lead to overvoltage and problems in the grid. Therefore, acceptable limits must be fixed, to improve the power quality in the distribution system.

Identification of the solutions that most appropriate to mitigate negative effects depend on the power grid parameters and the operating conditions. The first solution is focused on energy storage management. Besides, the second is focused on determining the optimum of the PV system size and best location by an evolutionary algorithm.

Integration of Photovoltaics plants with energy storage systems needs more attention in terms of influence on the power quality of the power grid. This research presents a methodology adopted on energy storage management, that improves PV penetration to a higher level without overvoltage in the power grid. The optimization problem is formulated by defining the optimum power value at which the energy storage process should begin. Furthermore, determining this value depends mainly on avoiding any problems with the voltage profile. Energy must be stored during periods in which the output voltage along the feeders exceeds the grid considerations. The analysis focuses on a critical scenario involving the highest irradiance and the worst bus under constant loading conditions. and the obtained results showed the advantages of the proposed methodology. This study aims to enable all utility consumers to install high-level penetration PV systems without negative impacts on the electrical grid.

The PV systems represent an effective solution to improve the performance of the power grid by reducing the feeder's active power load and improving the voltage profile, which minimizes the energy loss of feeders if the location and size are chosen appropriately. A new multi-objective algorithm is proposed for determining the optimal sizing and allocation of the photovoltaic systems in radial distribution systems. A Jaya algorithm is modified to find the PV capacities for limited bus locations at the grid. The proposed algorithm showed better performance against known techniques, and the results are presented. Besides, a new distinguished methodology is improved and developed based on the Jaya algorithm to find the optimum capacity of each photovoltaic system that satisfies an improvement of the voltage profile and reduces power losses under high penetration levels. Also, optimum capacities are determined by considering the connection of the PV systems for all buses along with the grid. Furthermore, the proposed method is verified on the standard IEEE-33 bus test system with high penetration rates. Simulation and validation are obtained by MATPOWER and OCTAVE software.
