El objetivo de esta tesis es analizar, desde un punto de vista histórico, la especialidad de Cirugía General en la Región de Murcia durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX, desde 1950 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 1999. Dicho análisis está realizado a través de la investigación en los archivos de los hospitales públicos y privados, Instituciones sanitarias y académicas de la Región de Murcia, publicaciones recogidas en bases de datos (Índice Médico Español, IBECS y Medline) o tesis doctorales, y en los datos obtenidos mediante encuestas y entrevistas a los Cirujanos que han hecho la especialidad de Cirugía o han trabajado en la Región de Murcia. Los datos obtenidos han sido clasificados en una base de datos Excel, analizándose los siguientes apartados: Lugar y fecha de nacimiento, fecha de defunción y de jubilación, Universidad donde cursaron la carrera de Medicina y fecha de licenciatura, centro de formación de la especialidad y duración, vía de formación pre-MIR/MIR, fecha de inicio de su actividad profesional como Cirujano en Murcia, rotación por Hospitales dentro de La Región, Jefaturas, subespecialización, realización de Tesis Doctoral, rotaciones externas, colaboración con la Universidad, publicaciones, revistas donde publican, idioma de publicación y líneas o grupos de investigación. Resultados: Se ha encontrado 33 centros con actividad quirúrgica en el periodo estudiado y 198 cirujanos que se han formado o han ejercido la especialidad de Cirugía General y Digestiva, en la Región de Murcia. De ellos el 87% son varones frente a un 13% de mujeres; la mayoría del grupo (65) han nacido en la década de los 50; 92 han nacido en la Región de Murcia; es la década de los 80, cuando se incorporan a trabajar el mayor número de Cirujanos (48); 82 han estudiado en la Universidad de Murcia; el 62% se ha formado vía MIR; la mayoría de Cirujanos (85), se ha formado en el Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca (HUVA); 87 han ejercido alguna Jefatura ya sea de Servicio, Sección o Zona; 77 Cirujanos han trabajado en un solo centro hospitalario; 112 Cirujanos han optado por la subespecialización; 83 cirujanos han realizado la Tesis Doctoral; el 32% ha hecho una rotación externa en centros de referencia a nivel mundial en relación con la especialidad, y el 32.% ha ejercido una labor docente con la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Murcia. En cuanto a las publicaciones el número total de artículos publicados es de 646, evidenciándose un crecimiento exponencial durante el periodo estudiado, destacando 11 cirujanos como los máximos productores de La Región, perteneciendo todos a la escuela del Profesor Pascual Parrilla Paricio, del HUVA, siendo éste el máximo productor con un total de 486 artículos. La revista que cuenta con mayor número de publicaciones es Cirugía Española y el idioma en el que publican mayoritariamente los Cirujanos Murcianos es el español, comenzando a publicar en inglés en el año 1990 y a partir de ahí con una tendencia creciente, publicando al final del periodo estudiado mayor número de artículos en inglés que en español. Tras la llegada del Dr. Parrilla a Murcia, se ponen en marcha dos grupos o líneas de investigación centrados en el estudio de la motilidad intestinal y en el trasplante de órganos.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze, from a historical point of view, the specialty of General Surgery in the Region of Murcia during the second half of the 20th century, from 1950 to December 31, 1999. This analysis has been carried out through research in the archives of public and private hospitals, health and academic institutions of the Region of Murcia, publications collected in databases (Spanish Medical Index, IBECS and Medline) or doctoral thesis, and in the data obtained through surveys and interviews to Surgeons who have done the specialty of Surgery or have worked in the Region of Murcia. The data obtained has been classified in an Excel database, analysing the following sections: Place and date of birth, date of death and retirement, University where they studied medicine and degree, specialty training center and duration, pre-MIR / MIR training route, start date of his professional activity as Surgeon in Murcia, rotation by Hospitals within the Region, Headquarters, subspecialisation, Doctoral Thesis, external rotations, collaboration with the University, publications, the magazines where they publish, language of publication and lines or groups of investigation. Results: We have found 33 centers with surgical activity in the period studied and 198 surgeons who have trained or have practiced the specialty of General and Digestive Surgery, in the Region of Murcia. Of these, 87% are males compared to 13% of females; the majority of the group (65) were born in the 1950s; 92 were born in the Region of Murcia; it is the decade of the 80s, when the largest number of Surgeons (48) are incorporated to work; 82 have studied at the University of Murcia; 62% has been training as a resident internal doctor; the majority of Surgeons (85), has been trained in the "Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca" (HUVA); 87 have exercised some Headquarters either Service, Section or Zone; 77 Surgeons have worked in a single hospital center; 112 Surgeons have opted for subspecialisation; 83 surgeons have completed the Doctoral Thesis; 32% have done an external rotation in centers of reference worldwide in relation to the surgery specialty, and 32.% have been professors or have collaborated with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Murcia. Regarding publications, the total number of articles published is 646, evidencing an exponential growth during the period studied, highlighting 11 surgeons as the top producers of the Region, all belonging to the school of Professor Pascual Parrilla Paricio, of HUVA, being this the maximum producer with a total of 486 articles. The magazine that has the largest number of publications is "Cirugía Española" and the language in which the Murcian Surgeons are mostly published is Spanish, beginning to publish in English in 1990 and from there with an increasing trend, publishing at the end of the period studied, more articles in English than in Spanish. After the arrival of Dr. Parrilla in Murcia, two groups or lines of research focused on the study of intestinal motility and organ transplantation are launched.
