Understanding the function of genes and their products - proteins - and other parts of the genome is known as functional genomics. Functional genomics relies extensively on the use of computers to store, organize and analyze data. Moreover, computers can be used to predict the structure or the function of a novel protein, using knowledge obtained from other proteins. This new research field is usually referred to as bioinformatics.
