Resumen de Un viaje en el tiempo. El "poble espanyol" de montjuïc

Sandra Moliner Nuño

  • To carry out the project of the Poble Espanyol de Montjuïc, created for the Universal Exposition of Barcelona in 1929, a series of trips across Spain were undertaken between 1927 and 1928. They visited 1,600 towns where hundreds of photographs were taken in addition to travel notes in notebooks that until today have remained hidden, as well as postcards and letters that were daily crossed between the travelers and their relatives and the organizers of the Exhibition. The research focuses mainly on the graphic material collected during these trips and presents the reproduction of each of them as if it were a diary. The detailed reconstruction of the trips is important since it helps to understand how it influenced the final result of the project, which is the main objective of this study. The work is divided into three fundamental chapters, the (PRE) TRIP, the TRIP and the (POST) TRIP, which follow a chronological order that allows us to understand the historical context in which we find ourselves, the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, and the evolution suffered by the project from start to finish. The first chapter explains everything that happened before the trip, from the origin of the Poble Espanyol when it was still only an idea, the appointment of the members of the team and the first draft of the project prior to the trip. The second chapter is the backbone of work. In it the first and second trip are reconstructed as a (RE) DIARY, which has been possible thanks to the material found in different public and private collections which has also led to the the discovery of the travel notebooks used during the trip. This is unpublished material that comes to light for the first time in this thesis. Finally, the third chapter analyzes all the material collected during the trips and its translation in the final project seeing how it changes the initial draft. This work follows a chronological order that will guide us through the "making of" of the Poble Espanyol from the development of the final project to the execution of the works until the inauguration day and we'll see how some historical events will happen that will cause changes in the project and will bring the decision to make further trips.

The reconstruction of all trips is carried out in the most informed way possible, with the intention of being able to introduce ourselves in the skin of each of the travelers which will makes us relive that experience, as well as perhaps allowing us to get emotionally involved. However, despite the proposed chronological order, temporary jumps are made to link the trip with the work finally executed, to demonstrate the analogies and correspondences with the final project. This research acknowledges in a especial way the studies previously conducted on the Poble Espanyol by other researchers like Soledad Bengoechea in her book "Els secrets del Poble Espanyol 1929-2004", Stella Rahola Matutes in her dissertation "two walks through Poble Espanyol" and other books and articles published by Oriol Bohigas, Josep Mª Rovira and Xavier Monteys, among others, therefore, I have to admit that I am not a pioneer researcher on this topic. However, none of the works mentioned above investigated in greater depth the central theme of this thesis, which is the trip, the material collected in it and how it influenced the evolution of the project. This investigation, therefore, contributes to take a step further, which complements the previous ones, by expanding and ordering the documentation that exists on these trips and shed light on the decisive moment of the genesis of Poble Espanyol to demonstrate, at the end of the road, that the trip was essential for the end result of the project, as well as, thanks to the unpublished material that provides, becoming the basis for future research.
