  • Resumen
    • This doctoral thesis focuses on the understanding of the concept of public space by children and older adults. It builds an interdisciplinary theoretical framework between architecture and social sciences that aims to recognize the different forms of use, appropriation and spatial transformation that the subjects of study show in relation to the Plaza Angel Pestaña in the Prosperitat neighborhood and Plaza Can Robacols of the Camp de l'Arpa del Clot district of the city of Barcelona.

This research has been developed through a documentary methodology that supports the theoretical framework of the same and an extensive field work that combines qualitative and quantitative tools. As findings, the importance of the Urban Social Movements in the head of the Neighborhood Associations, who have fought for the improvement of the quality of life of the inhabitants of the neighborhoods under study, are highlighted. Likewise, it is highlighted that the Plaza Angel Pestaña and Plaza Can Robacols are configured as urban landmarks and historical and social references that promote cohesion and a sense of place within the neighborhoods to which they belong.

In the chapter called "The right to the city: between the built and the everyday", an analysis of the most representative physical and social components of the city is practiced, which is understood as an inhabited space and as a source of socialization. For this reason, it is necessary to delve into the importance of public space from the perspective of physical and social construction and determine relevant aspects of it, such as its physical composition, the guidelines that must be taken into account when designing it and the different types of recreational areas. For this, a recount of the social urban history of the city of Barcelona between 1854 and 2006 is made, with a special emphasis on citizen demands and the conception of the right to the city, proposed by the urban social movements of the city.

The chapter "Subjects, places and actions: architecture as a meeting point and common denominator" establishes the human being as the fundamental axis of the study and analyzes its relationship and development with respect to the city and, therefore, its architecture. Initially, the cycle of life (beginning and end) is taken as a starting point with respect to the children's group and reflects on the perception, recognition and spatial value that they manifest in relation to the spaces that are part of them of his daily life. Next, it delves into the group of older adults, based on criteria such as aging, gender and public space. Finally, a description of the geographical framework is made, in which a contextualization of the districts of Sant Martí and Nou Barris and, later, of the Can Robacols and Ángel Pestaña squares is developed.

In the chapter "The value of everyday experience" the empirical results of this doctoral thesis are condensed. Here we present in detail the data obtained through the implementation of the methodology and the fieldwork carried out both in the neighborhood Camp de l'Arpa del Clot (Can Robacols square) and in the Prosperitat neighborhood (Angel Pestaña square). This section is characterized by expressing the internal voice of the author of the doctoral thesis and revealing the experiences, insights and realities found in situ, translated by subtopics with the support of expert authors on the issues raised. Through these, the life experience of both the children's group and the elderly is categorized with respect to the spaces that are part of their daily life. Finally, the conclusions and recommendations are exposed, as a result of the development of the doctoral thesis, the bibliography and the annexes that support it.
